I realize you said this was rhetorical but it just so happens that I've been having some unusually stellar service lately myself soooo.... I have a few 'theories'.
1) Uneducated minimum wage people who could not possibly give less of a shit about anyone's problem...they are just there to read a script and get us off the phone as quickly as possible 2) One word - McJobs 3) Outsourcing? 4) They have office pools to see how many people they can actually piss off instead of help? 5) Oh I just saw the post below this one and realize we're talking about AT&T. Yeah, they suck. When I was at Camp Crazy (out patient program...as opposed to Chez Crazy the inpatient part) the entire place was AT&T and Postal employees. NO LIE. That could play a part here... just sayin. :)

Babygator says that it is on the application that you have to be *off* to work at some places. She swears that is true at the Daity Queen.
Minimum wage, no training and no greater prospects ... all come to mind as reasons for poor sales and service people.
