You decide...

I got a comment on my Yard Retard & Other Exciting Tales that I didn't publish saying that my bad karma that day came from me using the word retard.  Seriously, there was no intent to disparage anyone.  So I will let you, my faithful readers, decide if my next door neighbor truly is in fact a Yard Retard.

It rained here today.  ALL DAY.  In fact when going to pick up my children from school, I had an intersection by my house completely underwater.  The right lane of a six lane road (three going each way) was completely underwater.  Do you think we got enough rain for one day?  Well, the Yard Retard has his sprinklers going right now.  My husband says it probably was because the rain didn't have the right PH balance.  Me -- well, you know what I think.

Any thoughts, comments, or perhaps a new nickname?

hhhmmmmm...could you shorten it to yard tard?

Or how about Mr. McBrainless or something like that?

McBrainless is good, but I don't think he deserves the Mr.

Actually, I strongly dislike people using the word Retard incorrectly. Retard is a specific word and when you use it the way you did you are specifying that to be retarded is bad or dumb. Having spent 30 years working with the special needs, I know it is offensive to have people use the word like you did. Tim Duncan (of Spurs fame) used the word like you did, and we wrote him a big letter explaining why we would prefer him to use another word. Maybe if you knew more special needs people you could understand why it is offensive to link them to people like your neighbor when their IQ has nothing to do with choice. I know the two words you have selected (or Big Mac did) rhymes but certainly you can come up with something just as clever.
Sorry, love, I vote to loose the word.

BWAB. I have a special needs child. It was not meant to hurt, you know me.

dijea I know you would never do that to hurt someone. Just let it go. You do not have to keep apologizing and agonizing.

One more thing and then I will shut up.

I do not think that people have a right to correct you or be rude in comments if they do not comment in the good times. If people do not like something then they can move on. If they feel really strongly about it then they can drop you an email.

It gets my goat when people find the time to delurk when they feel the need to correct or challenge but not to leave a positive comment on any other post.

I did not comment until you asked. I do know you, I know about "your baby", but didn't figure you had spent much time with people who were actually retarded.... I also KNOW you never meant to hurt anyone. Obviously your neighbor has a problem. Thank you for posting my comment, it is only my opinion and was only sharing it with you a) because you asked b) because I know you have an open mind and c) because I love you.
Isn't it wonderful that they make BOtH chocolate and Vanilla and we can choose too?

BWAB - I love you too. But I choose Chocolate!

The word "retard" is tossed around a lot as slang, and in spite of its intent to hurt or not, it feeds a perception of mentally retarded people that is not flattering or kind. Since you asked for input, I am assuming it bothers you that someone may have found it offensive, regardless of your intent. I support bloggers in writing freely, and that the discretion to stay or leave is the reader's, so maybe just consider the comments here as other viewpoints in your decision.

ok gotta weigh in.... I have a special needs child with severe mental health issues and I do not take offense to the word "retard" at all. AND I'm one of those people who use it in a non-Webster's dictionary definition kinda way. As previously stated, it has just become part of today's slang. Plus isnt the "PC" term 'mentally challenged' if you are referring to a person of an IQ lower than 80 and fitting all the criteria for the label of mental retardation?

I am not disparaging anyone's crusade against using the word in a proper or improper way but... sometimes a word is just a word and a freakin retard is simply just a freakin retard - especially if there is no malice in the context in which the word is used.

Just MY opinion :)
