Looking to the positives.

Well, it has been a tough week, and it's only Tuesday. I had to do something I hated yesterday. I turned in my notice. Yes, I handed in my resignation. I didn't want to. I love my job, but unfortunately the cost of childcare was far more than I made - on all the fronts I looked at. My mother even offered to come up and watch the kids, but her age, the distance she had to travel, the cost of gas and the fact she's already a caregiver for my 86 year old grandmother just wouldn't let me accept that option.

This June I would have been with the company for 14 years. That's a long time. They are like family to me and I've been lucky, lucky, lucky to work there. So far I've been offered the luxury of re-evaluation in the fall to see if there is anything available. So all is not lost - Hope is still floating around. I can't imagine working anywhere else, but I may not have a choice. We'll see what happens - keep your fingers crossed. And if anyone knows of any overnight or weekend work - I'm available. :) My husband will be taking up the slack, so everyone cheer for The Fabulous Husband, he deserves it.

So I guess I'm unemployed and not by choice, although I made it happen and if that's not confusing enough the loss of income will hit us harder than I like. I wasn't really working for fun or extras, we need the salary. Maybe it will give me a chance to clean out the attic and e-bay our junk away. It will give me a wonderful opportunity to spend the summer with the kids - although traveling with them will be limited. You will probably see tons and tons of entries on my blogs and the kids blogs. E wants to write books, so maybe we'll write an adventure story the three of us.

I'll bake and cook more -from scratch so feel free to forward some ideas to me. Hopefully write and take more pictures. Work a little on the house if I can afford to. Lose some more weight - chasing after the kids should keep me fit. Right?

I think you are smart to look at this in the positive. I think it is wonderfully awesome that you are going to get to spend the summer with your kids! I think you will find that this is going to be a good summer.

It's a not-so-glowing reflection on our society that the cost of child care is a reason you must quit your job. Finding a job you really like is tough, so it's a shame you are having to give it up. It's great they are keeping the door open though. They must really value you.

Its much more cost effective if you work full time, but as a part-time employee my options are full-time daycare or a nanny. I work less than 20 hours a week, so....

It is nice that the company will see what is available in Sept. My sister ran into the same problem when she went back to work as an architect. The first company said yeah, fine, take the summer off, but she thinks they blamed a lot of stuff that didn't get done on her when she did. Second company would have easily worked out a deal if the economy hadn't tanked, making her take her leave earlier than expected too.

Wow - that's crazy Dijea! I'm sure that everyone will miss ya. Working at BF is like a big family. I definitely think often of everyone and miss everyone, too - especially all the ladies in the back area. I think it's awesome, however, that you're going to be a stay at home Mom - that's my dream! I definitely don't want to work full time forever.

I have almost always been a stay at home mom. Even with the skills I have, it was still always more cost effective for me to just not work. If you were working just to pay child care, you might miss the job and the people, but you won't notice the lack of a pay check. There are lots of ways to economize if you *have* to or just *want* to in order to save up for something special. Talk to hubby and discuss finances. If you can, give yourself an allowance... I *give* myself $20 a week, even just $5 or $10 if you feel guilty with more.. but it's yours to spend as you please. Save it for something big or blow it every week on lunch out and a book or two out of the used book store or the clearance caps at Target. (I am the absolute QUEEN of Target clearance, lol) I am also part of several websites for marketing that GIVE me products for FREE to either test or tell other people about, often with excellent coupons to pass along as well. Lots of places to earn things like Amazon codes. I haven't paid full price for anything at Amazon in years, oftentimes I pay NOTHING. I'll give you the scoop... just say the word!

I'm sorry Sweetie, I believe great stuff can come out of something really bad. Just keep your eyes open.

I think maybe this could be your opportunity to explore something different?? I know you'll have to be financially creative about doing it but everything happens for a reason and I know how resourceful you are! I am confident that you will make this into something great for you AND the fam!
